The Basic Rowing Technique

The Rowbike outdoor rowing machine offers total body conditioning. Newcomers to the Rowbike will enjoy the simple but but highly effective exercise instructions that follow.

Rowing Stroke - Step 1

Push back your legs, keeping your back tilted slightly forward in a strong upright posture, with your arms straight and shoulders lose.

Rowing Stroke - Step 2

As the leg drive continues with constant speed, the body begins to move back, causing the torso to add to the work of the legs.

Rowing Stroke - Step 3

Maintaining constant speed, the body opens out andn the arms begin to add to the efforts of the legs and the torso.

Rowing Stroke - The Finish

Lean the body backward with the shoulders just behind the pelvis, maintaining a strong upward posture and draw the arms to just below the chest as the stroke is completed. Important-do not lock your knees (just like in any exercise movement)

During the return stroke, move your body by rocking your pelvis rather than by curling your spine. This keeps your lower back in a strong position, and if you do it correctly you should feel your weight shift from the back to the front of your seat as you move forward.

Learning to Coast one-handed

The need to go one-handed may arise when you need to wipe the sweat off your forehand, adjust your helmet, take your nose or just wave to your fans.

Practice in a parking lot. Since the power lever employs a shock cord/bungee cord to return the power lever into the forward position. You must keep the power lever from returning forward.

  1. Pull the power lever into your thighs in pinch between them. This will keep the power lever from polling forward. Practice this and feel comfortable holding the power lever in between your thighs before you move on to the next step.

  2. You may now proceed to take one hand off the handle bars for a quick second just like you were learning how to ride one-handed on a special petal by growing up. Keep your hand close to the handlebar for recovery and then you may gradually take it farther from handlebar.

Take the time to practice this so when you are in a situation that requires you ride one-handed, you will be ready to make that move!
